Housekeeping FAQ

Here are some of the most common housekeeping questions the staff at Custom Maid gets:

How many housekeepers do you send?
You can expect two or three people to clean your home. All work will be overseen by the team captain, who will review the work before the team leaves.

I work a lot. Will I have to be home for you to clean?
No. While we would enjoy meeting you, we are able to clean your home whether you’re home or not.

What if I lock you out?
Mistakes happen, and we understand this. However, your appointment was booked specifically for you, meaning business was turned away. Also, our employees depend on cleanings for their income. Therefore, you will be charged the full rate for lock outs or cancellations after 7:30 a.m.

Can I get an estimate?
Yes. We’re not interested in wasting your time if our costs don’t match your budget. The initial phone call will be followed up with a walkthrough to look at your home.

Do you perform background checks on your employees?
Custom Maid prides itself in hiring only the best caliber of housekeepers: trustworthy, professional, experienced and dependable. To make sure this is done, we perform a criminal background check and a drug test on each employee.

Virginia Beach Housekeeping: 3 Easy Ways to Clean Your House Fast

Want to get your house cleaning done fast? Expecting guests, and don’t want them to see a dirty home, but you’re running low on time? Here are five easy ways to get all the housekeeping in your Virginia Beach home done quickly.

Schedule
Hindsight is 20/20, but scheduling a day to clean your home will mean you won’t have to rush around next time. You may want to handle each room on different days; for example, handling the bathroom on Tuesdays and taking care of the master bedroom on Fridays. Plus, if you miss a room because of a scheduling conflict, you will have only missed a little bit of time instead of the whole house. If you try to handle your house cleaning in one fell swoop, you’ll just tire yourself out and nothing will get done.

Put products in one area
Many of our cleaning efforts are devoted to gathering up the necessary cleaning products. An easy way to avoid this time waster is to put all the cleaning products in one area. If you have more than one bathroom, put the same products in each. You won’t have to carry toilet brushes from room to room, and won’t suffer from cleaning burnout.

If you put the cleaning products in a place where they can be seen, you are more likely to clean on a regular basis. You will find yourself keeping your home more clean, meaning less of a housekeeping efforts.

Reduce clutter
If your home is full of belongings, it will be difficult to keep it clean. Divesting yourself of clutter is one of the best ways to ensure a fast clean. How many times have you found it difficult to vacuum because you have too much furniture, or dust because the tops of your dressers and tables are covered in trinkets? Reducing the amount of stuff you have in each room will make your house look more aesthetically pleasing and easier to clean, and will reduce stress. You’ll feel more calm and tranquil in a decluttered home.

For bathrooms and kitchens, here are three tips each to make the process go faster:

Bathrooms
  • Steam will loosen dirt, and make wiping down the tub or shower a lot easier. So, clean it after someone is done cleaning themselves.
  • Use vinegar on shower door tracks to remove any mildew and mold. Pour vinegar into the track, and let it sit for five minutes. Remove it by rinsing.
  • A sponge mop can clean shower walls in a cinch. Plus, it save you from constant stretching and bending.

Kitchens
  • Mix dishwasher detergent with a gallon hot water. This solution will greatly clean stoves, floors, fridges, glass, walls and more.
  • Make stainless steel shine by putting white vinegar on a cloth and wiping.
  • Place a coffee cup halfway filled with water, and cook on high for two minutes. The steam will loosen any baked on food.

Housekeeping Tips from Custom Maid

Tried everything, but can’t seem to keep the housekeeping in order at your Virginia Beach home? The staff at Custom Maid understands, as we run everyday into frustrated persons who can’t understand how their house cleaning went awry. Don’t get discouraged, however. Here are some tips to make cleaning your home a little easier:

Listen to music
If thinking about cleaning up the clutter in your home is causing you to pull out your hair, start by putting on some music before even lifting one finger to clean. Music is proven to reduce stress and calm you down. This will help your efforts to clean as you’ll get more done by not being so stressed.

Start small
If you try to get all your cleaning done at once, you’re going to burn out and probably swear to never again dust or vacuum. You need to realistically aim for true goals, instead of setting your ambitions too high. Start with one room at a time instead of trying to tackle everything at once. Once you’ve gotten the house taken care of, get into the habit of cleaning up a small mess before it turns into a large nightmare.

Have the kids help
You can always use an extra set of hands, and what better way to teach responsibility and the value of working together? Getting your kids involved will make the process a lot smoother, and few are more eager to help than young children. This will make cleaning your home less of your “job” and more of a family responsibility where everyone chips in.

A Valentine's Gift to Remember: Hire Maid Services

Are you looking for a Valentine's Day gift that is sure to make her swoon? Does your significant other have so much on their calendar that trying to find time to eke out a little space for fun and romance seems virtually impossible? Why not surprise them with a gift that will benefit you both?

For many of us, we are so busy with the requirements of family, job and assorted extracurricular activities that finding time for the basic of home care is difficult. To give your partner a gift that will be long remembered, why not have a maid service come in to clean house? After all, if the house is cleaned up so that all those time consuming jobs like dusting, sweeping, vacuuming or polishing are done, then there is more time to enjoy each other's company-whether you just stay home in Chesapeake and relax or if you opt for a quiet dinner in Hampton Roads or Virginia Beach.

So if you are looking to hire a Virginia Beach maid service- or one anywhere else in the country, then you want to be sure that you hire one who will clean things as you would like. To do this, there are an assortment of features you will want to look for. These important aspects are:
  • Does the cleaning crew arrive on time and are they easily identifiable as the cleaning company? Whether it is having uniforms or a vehicle that has the name of the maid service easily read on it, this is a great way to ensure that the people who show up are reputable. When making the appointment, don't hesitate to ask who the members of the cleaning crew will be.
  • Do your homework and be sure that the cleaning company and its workers have rave reviews on Angies List or with the Better Business Bureau.
  • When hiring a professional cleaning company, be sure that the workers are licensed, bonded, and insured so that your Valentine's gift doesn't end up costing more than anticipated. You should also ask what type of training the professional cleaners have had in regards to cleaning. For example, do they know the best way to clean hardwood floors? What about marble countertops?
  • Be sure that you and the cleaning company have a clear understanding of the jobs to be done and what cleaning agents the maid services uses. Many maid services today have opted for eco-friendly products as they are safer for people, animals and the environment; these not only leave your home smelling great but keep everyone healthier as well. Also, remember, that when you hire a maid service, you cannot expect them to do a job exactly the way you do; you are hiring them to help you out and give you more time with your loved one, so enjoy the extra time and be flexible when necessary.
